I could do a thread asking about your favorite video game OSTs or composers, and that's certainly a valid route, but I am insidious and have an agenda so we're not doing that in this thread.
Music sets a mood. It accompanies almost every scene of a game or an anime or even modern movies because unless you have no soul the music creates an emotion that the scene would ideally capitalize on.
Did you know most Virtual Tabletops have a Jukebox feature for this exact reason? Sure you could fill it with sfx and ambient sounds, but the real use is to create atmosphere. To set a mood.
I've been digging through video game OSTs for months trying to find music I can play in the background of a TTRPG campaign (you knew it was coming). I've found some strong contenders, but a lot of what I end up finding is too much "Epic Fantasy" and "Epic Fight Theme." Every scene is not Epic Fantasy or Epic Fight Scene. Sometimes you want something sad and gentle. Sometimes you want something casual. Sometimes you want something silly and upbeat.
Seeing as I have more battle themes than I could ever know what to do with, I'm putting out a call for you to share your favorite Incidental Music. Music that sets the mood for a location or a situation rather than something to get blood pumping.

I'll get us started with an example.

Radiata Stories has a fantastic soundtrack with a lot of bounce that just screams "Whimsy." I've found more than a few songs from this game that are great for little comedic scenes.
I refer to this one as "When The Braincell Overheats."
Red: I Was A Teenage Anarchist +1
Blue: Afflicted With Tired Sleepy +5
Yellow: Titterpeg Nonsense +3
Roll to Dye

Slumber

Oh man, I feel like I could find random examples of incidental music all the time. The one example that comes to mind right mow is Omori.

I will say that the music is sonically more suited to childlike memories or neighborhood experiences, but that's also why I find it so unique and useful. I want to develop my own sounds and music for my own games in a similar style.

for dramatic or sad settings, I like to look for classical music. the Moonlight sonata is one of my favorites for a melancholic feeling.

ofcourse classical music can be used for any (human) royal court as well.

i LOVE songs that paint a mental image of a landscape or a situation, so i have a few examples:

fountains of rome is very solid background morning music

jesu, joy of man's desire (or whatever the english translation for it is) is a great royal/highly religious piece, and i think that j.s. bach's works generally speaking are great for religious settings

berlioz's symphonie fantastique has a built in story, and is a tone poem in nature, but i find that the 2nd movement (the ball) is really good for regal dances
